The Youth of the Year Award 2017 organised by the Kerŷgma Movement was awarded to Agara Foundation.  The award, which is sponsored by APS Bank, was announced by Mrs Bernice Micallef, President of the Kerŷgma Movement.

Her Excellency Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta, was present at the ceremony and mass which was celebrated by Archbishop Emeritus Paul Cremona O.P. at St Dominic’s Church, Rabat on Friday 16 February 2018.  Also present at the award-giving ceremony were Mrs. Bernice Micallef, President of Kerŷgma Movement, Dr George Hyzler, Chairman of the Selection Board, Mr. Hervé Delpech representing APS Bank, and other guests.  The Youth of the Year Trophy was handed to Stephanie Micallef who represented Agara Foundation by Archbishop Emeritus Paul Cremona.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The group “Agara Foundation” was founded in 2014, following a volunteer work experience in Ethopia by two persons, who then decided to expand their voluntary work and explore modern methods in the field of volunteering and technology.  In Ethopian the word Agara means “Move Along (together)”, and this is reflected both in the logo as well as the group’s vision, because its aim is to walk together with different communities and individuals all over the world to empower them in their respective environments without suffering any discrimination or distinction.  Agara supports communities around the world, including Kenya, Ethopia, Lebanon, Romania, Peru as well as Malta.  The foundation works hard to raise awareness and to deliver a voice for those who are in minorities or those whose dignity is not being protected and respected as they should be.

Agara Foundation is made up of a number of sub-teams but its main focus is on collecting second-hand laptops.  The team’s job is to format these laptops, install Windows and Office software and subsequently use these to teach, both locally and abroad, people who do not have the opportunity to learn IT.  For most of their projects, Agara sets up laboratories with these laptops offering varied lessons according to the needs of the particular individuals.

In August 2016, Agara carried out voluntary experiences in Calais and Dunkirk in France, two large refugee camps.  There they experienced some of the hardships that life is offering to refugees who are often judged and persecuted.  The Agara team carried out daily sessions of teaching IT as well as other fun activities where they also encouraged the refugees to air their thoughts.

In 2017 Agara had experiences in Lebanon and Romania where they set up laboratories with the laptops collected from Malta.  The team carried out several sessions of teaching IT which ranged from basic to advanced ECDL, photoshop etc.

The plan of the Foundation for 2018 is to further strengthen what is currently being done and implement new ideas and opportunities.  Two areas which are being explored are music and sports in the volunteering sector.  Another project is to give lessons to local children living in residential homes while providing them with laptops for educational purposes. They are also planning another project – a refugee camp in Greece, others in South Africa, some places in Asia and even in South America.  Agara follows up the projects already in place to ensure that they remain sustainable and work on how they can strengthen them further.

The Youth of the Year Award 2016 organised by the Kerŷgma Movement was awarded to Mr James Borg Cumbo from San Gwann.  The award, which is sponsored by APS Bank, was announced by Mrs Bernice Micallef, President of the Kerŷgma Movement.  A Certificate of Special Merit was also awarded to Sara Portelli from Birkirkara for her voluntary work promoting the culture of life, defending the speechless and for her work within the Franciscan Community.

Her Excellency Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta, presented the trophy at the end of a mass which was celebrated at St Dominic’s Church, Rabat on Friday 3 February 2017.  Also present at the ceremony were the President’s husband Mr Edgar Preca, Prof. Emanuel P. Delia, Chairman of APS Bank Limited who sponsored the event, Mrs. Bernice Micallef, President of Kerŷgma Movement and Dr George Hyzler, Chairman of the Selection Board, among other guests.

James Borg Cumbo, is a 25-year-old youth from San Gwann who works with an insurance company.  In 2012, James went with friends for a youth exchange in Finland.  Here the participants were encouraged to reflect on the realities of life beyond our shores and this enkindled in them an interest to do missionary work.  The idea of setting up Karibu! Malta evolved from this (Karibu means Welcome in Swahili).

James was involved in this project to encourage youngsters to go to Kenya under the Youth in Action scheme but their application for funding was unsuccessful.  The youngsters who were interested to make this experience therefore decided that there was no alternative but to go anyway and pay the money from their own pockets.  At the time, James was secretary of the group and was responsible for the collection of local records as well as planning the activities for the children in Kenya.  Contact was made with Archbishop Emanuel Barbara in Kenya, and in August 2013 the group went to this country and from here commenced the Karibu! Malta experience.  The work done included general maintenance, activities with children and socializing with local people of Malindi and other villages nearby.  At the same time, they assessed projects which could be done in the future.  Here James talked with children to see how they really felt and what they wished for.  He saw the difference between the wishes of Maltese children those of Kenya who wished for the basics of life.

The group was so overwhelmed by the impact of this experience especially when returning to the comforts of their own homes, that they decided that this was not going to be a one-time event.  They therefore set up a specific committee, with James being appointed President.  He was responsible for drawing up a plan of fund-raising activities throughout the year and how the money collected could best be spent.  Team-building experiences were set-up for participants, the tour for 2014 was planned in conjunction with continuous communication with Archbishop Barbara.  This time they went to Ruiru and James and the other volunteers stayed at the Daughters of the Sacred Heart campus. Here the children called daily together with other street people. The Maltese group helped with cooking and food distribution and its financing.  For the children, this house was their only hope.  Karibu! Malta also funded a new kitchen so children could also learn how to cook.  Moreover, they laid tiles in the nearby church and also restructured St. Theresa Nuzzo School.

In 2015 and 2016 work was concentrated in Kipangajeni, a village located on the outskirts of Malindi.  The first building made of stone in the village was financed and built to be used as a chapel, as well as for various activities such as education for women, an infant school and a commuting area for residents of the village.  They also built for them their first public toilet.

In 2016 they built two rooms to be used as classrooms and two smaller rooms as offices for teachers.  They also arranged for the building of two other public toilets and installed a gutter around the roof of the hall to collect rainwater for free consumption.

James has so far gone to Kenya for four consecutive years and is planning another trip for July 2017.  This time a new 3-year project is being initiated in Mbaoni, another village very distant from the town of Malindi and therefore resources are very limited.  Karibu! Malta already introduced themselved by building them a bore-hole.  The school needs to be rebuilt since the present one is made of branches and is very deteriorated.  There are no benches for children who have sit on the ground and write on their lap.  Due to the amount of residents, the project is quite big, involving 11 classrooms, 3 administrative offices and 5 toilet pits.  Residents also wish for a church to be used also as a community meeting place and where women can get some education.  The cost of this entire project is estimated at €90,000.

James’ role as president, with the help of other members, is to initially find the right candidates to participate and who are able to work as a team.  Afterwards he arranges regular meetings to prepare them well for what they should expect in Kenya, where they will be living and what is expected of them.  At the same time, James begins to negotiate the best travel prices and to be able to take up as much luggage as possible to fill them with clothes for children.  During this period, fund-raising activities are commenced to collect money for the projects, usually one activity per month.  James also contacts suppliers to obtain sponsorships, applies for any necessary permits and distributes work to the members to meet their expectations and so that everyone feels part of the project, simultaneously ensuring that all work is done.  He also maintains constant contact with Malindi to ensure that everything is still on and that the Archbishop of Malindi and his assistants are taking care of all necessary permits.  Locally he liaises with the Health Department so that the participants take the necessary vaccinations and keeps records of any special health conditions of the participants to ensure their health during the experience.

The project in Mboani is undoubtedly the biggest project ever undertaken by Karibu! Malta and James is confident that with the continued support and generosity of the Maltese along with the work of the group, they will succeed and look forward.

This trophy is awarded every year in honour of the late Dr Rudolph Saliba who was Kerygma Movement’s first president.  Ms Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca congratulated the winner and the other finalists and the Kerygma Movement for organizing this annual event which showcases the voluntary work of so many youths.  She said that the work carried out by these youngsters and many others gave her encouragement and confidence in the Maltese society and these young people needed to continue to encourage other youngsters to further the good work they are doing locally and in other countries especially in Africa.  The President described these young people as the peace-builders of our community and were giving a lesson to those people who were using fear to scaremonger people through false messages of fear from people who really need respect and dignity.  We must not introduce social tensions simply because they are here.  Although these Maltese people do not mind at all digging their hands into their pockets to help the missions, when they actually encounter any of these people in our country, they see them as some kind of alien.  There is therefore the need to have someone to reveal the truth of these situations where these creations of God who are fleeing wars, poverty and hunger need to be given respect, dignity and the friendship that of these youngsters with hearts brimming with love and solidarity were giving them.  She therefore thanked them once again and said she is proud of the work they were doing as peace-builders and urged them to disclose this truth in the local environment.

The Youth of the Year Award 2015 organised by the Kerŷgma Movement was awarded to the group Joy Boys from Għarb, Gozo.  The award, which is sponsored by APS Bank, was announced by Ms Tania Borg, President of the Kerŷgma Movement.

Her Excellency Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta, presented the trophy at the end of a mass which was celebrated at St Dominic’s Church, Rabat on Friday 12 February 2016.  Also present at the ceremony were the President’s husband Mr Edgar Preca, Prof. Emanuel P. Delia, Chairman of APS Bank Limited who sponsored the event, and Mrs. Tania Borg, President of Kerŷgma Movement, Dr George Hyzler, Chairman of the Selection Board, among other guests.

“Joy Boys is a group of youths, aged between sixteen and thirty years from Gharb Gozo.  These youths undoubtedly touch everyone’s hearts for their commitment and work in the voluntary sector especially their commitment to help everyone especially the residents of Gharb.

This group of young people lend a helping hand in all types of work especially manual work.  During their free time they help out in the church, the parish centre and also work in the warehouse containing the feast decorations, focusing mainly on restoration works.  This includes scraping, painting, maintenance on the various works and they also make fiberglass which is a very time-consuming process, requiring a lot of patience and dedication but above all, work that requires attention from a health and safety aspect.  Whenever any type of activity is being organised in the village they are always the first to give a helping hand so that all goes well.  They often organize dinners and other fundraising activities and the money raised goes towards funding the numerous maintenance works in the village, particularly towards the maintenance of the Parish Centre.  This centre is a second home for the young people of the locality where spiritual information meetings are held together with many other activities so that these youths have the opportunity to meet within a welcoming environment and get the opportunity to widen their knowledge.

When the village feast approaches these youths focus on the various feast decorations, including maintenance and other necessary work relating to the feast.  These include the decorations both inside and outside the church, works around the village, other activities and much more.  It may be stated that all these youths have their own jobs and therefore they spend all the rest of their free time working voluntarily.  Sometimes they continue working throughout the night.  They have changed almost all lights to LED lamps and also made new festoons.  They often undertake work in high places which can be rather dangerous and unsafe.

Last summer, this group embarked upon a missionary experience in the parish of Torovice, Albania, run by Fr Manuel Cutajar.  These youngsters carried out construction work and maintenance work in three houses belonging to the poorest families of Albania.  The works mainly included plastering and painting of the walls of the houses, installation of electricity and in one case also doing up the flooring.  Costs for the construction works were paid for from the donations collected from the parishioners of Gharb.  These young people worked tirelessly.  It is worth mentioning that on one particular day they manually mixed 17 sacks plaster and 5 sacks of cement.

They also prepared and distributed 150 hampers containing basic food items to the poorest among the poor of Albania.  Among others, these contained rice, pasta, flour and oil.  The hampers were distributed in a remote village called Malecaj-Kampi found deep within the mountains, a place which in the past served as a concentration camp.  Although to us such hampers are not worth much, to these people the hampers meant everything.

Joy Boys also donated a cow to a poor 38 year old widow, a woman who suffered a lot from her husband when he was still alive.  The cow cost €700 and was financed by a family from Gharb Gozo.  It surely be of great help to this poor woman and her four children.

The youths also donated 8 sheep worth €500 which will help another couple and their 4 daughters.

They also visited a house hosting severly disabled people, a house run by the Sisters of Mother Theresa, in the village of Shkoder.

This youth group undoubtedly never stops.  The calendar of activities for this year is prepared and full to the brim.  Some of these activities consist of fundraising and philanthropic events both within the parish community and even other institutions outside the locality.  Having experienced missionary work in Albania this youth group is looking forward to another experience, where the group is positive that others will join in.  The Albanian experience has left an indelible positive impact on them both spiritually and socially and has helped the poor community of Albania.  The youngsters within this group are always prepared for any event, ready to carry out any type of voluntary work which they do with dedication and great commitment.”

The nominees for this year’s Award were: Gabriel Cassar from Kirkop, Nicholas Cassar from Żebbuġ Gozo, Joy Boys from Għarb Gozo, Nikita Mizzi from Vittoriosa and Salesian Oratory Sliema.

This trophy is awarded every year in honour of the late Dr Rudolph Saliba who was Kerygma Movement’s first president.  Mrs Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca congratulated the winner, the other finalists and Kerygma Movement for organising this yearly event which brought to the fore the voluntary work of so many youngsters.  She said the most important thing is not the giving of money but the giving of one’s time to help others, time which can never be recovered.  She said that voluntary work transforms people who perform it but especially society itself which is in great need of the value of love.  Although thankfully we have no wars, our close neighbours are going through many conflicts and very difficult times with whole families suffering, basically because of the result of egoism.  So it is very important that we continue to strenghten the value of love to others even in our society which is facing great challenges.  There is the possibility that because of growing egoism we might forget about the suffering of others and therefore it is of utmost importance that these youths continue to help others out thereby changing our society.  This value of love for others was passed on to us by our forefathers and it is important that we strengthen and pass such values onto future generations.  She believes that there are many who are helping out in this regard and she therefore augured the finalists to never stop helping others in need.

The Youth of the Year Award 2014 organised by the Kerŷgma Movement was awarded to the Youth Alive Foundation from Marsascala.  The award, which is sponsored by APS Bank, was announced by Ms Tania Borg, President of the Kerŷgma Movement.

Mr Edgar Preca who represented the President of Malta, presented the trophy at the end of a mass which was celebrated at St Dominic’s Church, Rabat on Friday 30 January 2015.  Also present at the ceremony were Prof. Emanuel P. Delia, Chairman of APS Bank Limited who sponsored the event, and Mrs. Tania Borg, President of Kerŷgma Movement, among other guests.

“The Youth Alive Foundation is an organization of young volunteers which originated in 1996 as a youth ministry named “Youth Alive” within Our Lady of the Sacred Heart parish in Sliema.  The main objective of the group has always been the formation of youth through active participation in the community based on the solid foundations of the Word of God and the Franciscan spirituality.  In August 2007, Youth Alive was set up as a Foundation, centered at “Dar Frate Jacoba” in Marsascala which house had been donated to them by two kind-hearted women.  This home consists of a 200 year old farmhouse and includes various acres of arable land.

Spirituality, charity and the environment are the three pillars on which Dar Frate Jacoba is founded.  The residents live in an open community, with a permaculture system, which is the best system that embraces these three pillars.  This is the first and currently the only Home in Malta to date, that practices these three principles in a sustainable manner.

This Home welcomes young people who are going through difficult life situations and who are often labelled as ‘social cases’ living on the edge of society and who are homeless.  This innovative project is centered around an open community of Religious and lay people living together with and catering for these youths.  There are also a number of other youngsters who attend for a number of hours or even days to benefit from the services offered at the Home.  In the essence of such environment one can find a therapeutic system which allows the liberation of the inner self and violence is not inflicted against the person’s character.  The person learns to overcome his fears and inhibitions without causing damage to him or to others, allowing his true character to emerge.  These young people learn to help each other, work in the fields and care for the farm animals and at the same time go out to work or attend school.  Youth Alive Foundation is currently taking care of five young people between 11 and 17 years of age.  In view that the demand has been great and placements are limited, Youth Alive Foundation decided to expand the Home to be able to cater for up to 16 youths.  This project consists of a basement, a semi-basement and another floor with eleven bedrooms.  The actual building is already completed in shell form and work has now commenced on its finishing.  Although all works are dependent on the generous donations from benefactors, the Foundation organises a number of fund-raising activities since the cost of the new building amounts to €200,000.  Among these initiatives are schemes whereby people pledge donations over a number of years.  Open weekends are also held where crafts and food products produced during the year by the residents, are sold.  Social activities include barbecues and dinners. Volunteers attend frequent courses of formation, retreats, spirituality, among other subjects.

The lifestyle adopted at the Home requires a lot of patience and dedication.  The point of departure is known but the road is long.  The highs and lows together with other challenges are there to continue strenghtening the commitment of the Youth Alive Foundation.

The nominees for this year’s Award were: Joseph Cauchi from Għarb, Gozo, Franco Cefai from Żebbuġ, Gozo, Andrea Grima from Luqa, Edward Mifsud from Fgura and the Youth Alive Foundation from Marsascala.

This trophy is awarded every year in honour of the late Dr Rudolph Saliba who was Kerygma Movement’s first president.  Mr Preca congratulated the winner and all the other nominees.  He stated that being a Christian today was very difficult as could be seen from what was going on in other countries abroad where christians are being massacred daily.  In Malta too, being a Christian is not considered trendy any more.  However this did not prevent him from showing his beliefs even in public places.  Prayer was of utmost importance.  He said that it was unfortunate that the media practically always portrays the negative element of today’s youngsters such as when they take drugs or commit crimes but did not do the same to promote the good so many other youngsters were doing in society.  An excellent example was that portrayed by the five nominees for this year’s award.
